About Cameron Lim
I built LingoIsland because I wanted the kind of Mandarin-learning system I couldn’t find elsewhere—topic-first, level-tuned, and designed to recycle vocabulary until it actually sticks.

My story
Making Chinese friends
While attending the University of Waterloo I started making a lot of Chinese friends in class. I really wanted to connect with them, but quickly realized my Mandarin still needed work when it came to talking about certain topics and local slang. What I knew from textbooks wasn't enough for real conversation.
Why LingoIsland
That gap—between wanting to connect and actually being able to connect in Mandarin is what led me to build LingoIsland. I wanted to learn the vocabulary and expressions people really use, on the topics that come up in life and in friendship.
Authentic Mandarin, with help from friends
I got my Chinese friends involved from the start. They help make sure the site teaches authentic, actually used Mandarin — the kind you hear in real life and in casual chat, not just formal or textbook Chinese. That's the Mandarin LingoIsland is built around.
Me on YouTube
I run a study-vlog channel focused on studying smarter and staying consistent. Creating content for 120K+ subscribers taught me what actually helps people stick with it: clarity, structure, and feedback. That’s the same approach behind LingoIsland.
